CYCLE OF CONFERENCES ON DISINFORMATION DURING GLOBAL MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY WEEK

GLOBAL LITERACY WEEK

In line with its mission to ‘empower people to read the world’, the Livraria Lello Foundation is organising a series of conferences during World Information Literacy Week, which runs from 24 to 31 October. The initiative has the support of the Association for Media Literacy and Journalism for the scientific structuring of the agenda.

Organised in partnership with several leading educational institutions in Portugal, the Livraria Lello Foundation's aim with this initiative is to raise awareness of the growing threat that disinformation poses to contemporary democracies. This cycle is a response to the spread of fake news and will feature experts from various fields discussing the different dimensions of disinformation, including image manipulation, artificial intelligence and financial disinformation.

It should be noted that in 2023, the National Media Literacy Plan (PNLM) was approved, an important milestone that seeks to integrate media literacy into schools, preparing future generations to combat disinformation effectively. Already in the 2024/2025 school year, a pilot project has been launched with the new subject of ‘Literacies’, reinforcing the urgency of this theme in the education of young people.

This initiative thus reinforces the Livraria Lello Foundation's commitment to transforming reading and access to information into tools for social transformation, building a more aware, critical society.
